Heavy and Painful Periods

This is an important article to be read by all women who have experienced heavy and painful periods. Please pass this information on to all women and help raise awareness about the health risks as well as possible treatment for this condition.

Millions of women in the United States alone suffer from heavy and painful periods. This condition not only debilitates a woman’s ability to work and function in daily life but also is a serious danger to health if left untreated. Many women think that heavy periods are normal especially if they have had them for all their menstruating years… because this is all they know. Ladies, please know that heavy periods are not normal.

The excessive blood loss every month takes a tremendous toll on one’s body – it puts one’s blood supply in serious deficiency, weakens the entire energy system, damages the major organs and glands in the body including liver, spleen, heart, kidneys, thyroid and adrenal glands. Western Medicine Treatment

In western medicine, the two commonly prescribed methods of treatment for heavy, painful periods are birth control hormones and hysterectomy. Both methods are what we consider emergency measures. Birth control hormones can be used as a short-term, emergency treatment to quickly control the excessive hemorrhage. Likewise in severe cases where every treatment fails, hysterectomy is necessary but should be a last resort option. However, both methods have their drawbacks.

Birth control hormones can be useful short-term but not a feasible long term treatment for several reasons:
  • Birth control hormones suppress the natural functions of your hormone system.
  • Birth control hormones may control the bleeding but does not treat the root cause(s) and does not repair the damages done to the body, therefore many existing problems created by the heavy periods remain unfixed.
  • Many women reported that they still have heavy bleeding even while taking birth control hormones.
  • Long term use of hormones can contribute to cancer development.

Hysterectomy and its drawbacks:

  • Hysterectomy puts the body into menopause status which creates another set of problems due to the cessation of most hormone productions.

  • Not a feasible option for women of childbearing age who still desire to have children.

Alternative Treatment with Chinese Medicine

For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has treated the whole range of female health issues naturally and effectively including heavy and painful menstruation. Furthermore, Chinese medicine treats at the root level where the causes of the problem reside. Despite very severe conditions in which surgical intervention is the only remaining option, Chinese medicine can help the majority of women to heal naturally from heavy and painful periods.

How Chinese Medicine Works:

According to Chinese medicine diagnosis, the primary cause of heavy and painful periods is due to the stagnation of blood flow. Secondary cause is the excessive accumulation of heat in the body.

To treat this condition Chinese medicine utilizes both acupuncture and herbs to break up blood stagnation in the body, facilitate and regulate the movement of blood, and drain excess heat if present. By achieving this end, much of the heavy bleeding and pain can be resolved. Chinese medicine can repair the damages caused to the body through years of heavy menstruation as well as rebuild the energy system, blood system, and organ health. Depending on individual cases, Chinese medicine can effect long term or permanent healing.

Helpful Dietary & Lifestyle Tips:

  • Avoid heavy meat consumption especially red meat.
  • Drink a glass of red wine daily is helpful in the week before and the week of bleeding. Must be red wine -- white wine or liquor does not have the same effects.
  • Eat more eggplant in the week before and the week of bleeding. Eggplants have the function of breaking up blood stagnation specifically in the uterus.
  • Eat more purple color foods such as purple onion, purple cabbage, eggplants, blueberries, grapes etc. Purple color foods have the ability to break up blood stagnation in the body.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise or overexertion in the week before and the week of bleeding.

The sooner you start Chinese medicine treatment the better. Vitality, wellness, and a more normal pattern of menstruation can be restored as you go through this natural healing process. Menstruation days can be the time for a woman to embrace her femininity rather than dreading it, and the time to give extra loving care to her body. Every woman deserves this joy!
